Philosophy

-Our language is a key element to our foundation as Salish & Qlispe people.

-Language is taught through the concept that connections between our people and the world are significant to our understanding.

-The connection between our language, the land, our culture and our people must be a continual focus of language instruction, in order to sustain our traditional holistic way of learning.

-Our identity as Salish & Qlispe people is grounded in the past and rooted in the worldview of our ancestors.

Goal

*To create fully functional fluent Salish language speakers.

Guidelines for the Curriculum

  • Quality Language Materials

  • Elder and Student Immersion

  • Repetition and Review

  • Shutting off English

"As with any system or approach, there is no magical result. Every system and approach for learning Salish requires intensive study of quality language material, immersion with fluent Elders and other learners, and a commitment to turning off English. Once you have those 3 things going on, there are many approaches and methods that can be used. I think the trick is to stick to one and to fully implement it until deep fluency is achieved. Selecting, developing, and sticking to one systematic approach is usually the challenge." Chris Parkin 2011
